Day 12 'Unforgettable'

Above is the David Austin rose The Lady of Shalott growing in my front garden. I am slowly building up my collection of roses despite the lack of space. I prefer roses that have a scent and this is one of my favourites. But how to keep them free of pests and diseases? I can brush off aphids before they build up but black spot is more difficult to control and I have to resort to chemicals sadly.

Today I spent some time doing paperwork and checking bank statements etc. Then the post came and a letter from the DWP telling me that as I am approaching 80 (I do know this) I am due an increase in my pension. I shall be getting an extra 25p per week! That's a whole £ per month - £12 per year! WOW!

I then transferred some birthday money to my granddaughter in Belgium and that's always a brain exercise but I think I have managed it successfully.

After all that I needed a sit down and over a cup of coffee watched an episode of Silent Witness on catchup. Such silly stories - how forensic pathologists get so involved in the police investigation beggars belief but, of course, it is TV drama.

I have ordered more seeds although looking through the online catalogues a lot of favourites are unobtainable due to demand. I now have some tomato and broad bean seeds coming.

No such luck with another slot for an online food order though. No availability in April in either TESCO or Waitrose so it looks at though I shall have to continue getting essentials in Filco which I can easily manage during my daily dog walk.

Snippet from the News

'The billionaire retailer Philip Green is asking for taxpayer help to prop up his crumbling fashion empire with 14,500 employees set to be paid out of the government’s emergency wage support scheme.

Like other fashion retailers, Arcadia, which owns brands including Topshop, Dorothy Perkins and Miss Selfridge, is facing financial turmoil as the lockdown forces Britons to stop shopping. The company has already asked landlords for rent cuts and paused payments into its pension scheme.

Arcadia is owned by the entrepreneur’s wife, Tina Green, who is based in tax-free Monaco. The couple famously banked a £1.2bn dividend in 2005 which still stands as one of the biggest pay cheques in British corporate history. The fashion group, best known for its Topshop brand, last year only just managed to stave off collapse after creditors backed a rescue plan that involved the closure of 50 stores, 1,000 job losses and rent cuts of up to 50%.'

What a cheek!

I looked mine up. It was Unforgettable by Nat King Cole.
